WIST committee organizes the Women in Science and Technology Conference (WIST) and is assembled every other year ~7 months before the conference takes place in May.  WIST conference is a one-day symposium focusing on career and personal development as well as networking of women in STEM at all levels. The conference includes two inspiring and prominent keynote speakers, exciting and informative workshops, round-tables, and seminars for individuals at all stages of their careers in both academia and industry, and provides excellent networking opportunities.

The WIST committee is divided into the following eight subcommittees:

Corporate Sponsorship Committee
Contact local biotech and technology companies, research organizations and service providers, and provide them opportunities to support women in scientific communities by sponsoring the WIST conference.

Facilities Committee
Contact the venues for the main event (UCSD Faculty Club) as well as the pre-conference reception, and negotiate the cost and plan the layout for all the talks, workshops, as well as desks for sponsors, bookstores, membership, and registration. They also contact and pick catering service for the meals, musician for the reception, and flower shop for decoration.

Publications Committee
Design the program for the conference and get it printed.

Public Relations Committee
Increase public awareness and interest in WIST conference using e-mail contacts within AWIS as well as outside organizations, local media, and internet social network sites, and local networking events. Develop AWIS-SD brand and image by designing business cards, bookmarks, mug cups, banner for use before or during the conference.

Registration Committee
Set up and keep track of online registration, and prepare the name tags for the conference. Set up the registration table on the day of conference, and design the post-conference online survey.

Scholarship Committee
AWIS San Diego Chapter’s scholarship program awards scholarships to women scientists pursuing their degrees in San Diego colleges and universities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics every year. The committee activities are:  updating contact list of science faculty and financial aid offices for distributing scholarship information, advertising the scholarship program in the fall, selecting scholarship recipients in the winter, presenting scholarship recipients at the conference.

Speaker’s Committee
At the conference there will be talks by two keynote speakers, several workshops, network sessions and roundtables. The speaker’s committee decides workshop titles, and selects and invites candidates for the speakers. At the conference, they will greet the speakers and help them set up their presentations.

Website Committee
The website committee designs and maintains the website for the WIST conference. This website is separate but linked to the main AWIS-SD website, and includes information on the schedule, speakers, registration, sponsors.
