Mission statement The Scholarship Program strives to encourage and reward aspiring women scientists pursuing their degrees in San Diego colleges and universities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The scholarships, now in their 13th year, are awarded annually and have contributed to students pursuing their degrees, conducting research projects, or assisting with additional educational expenses, with an emphasis on STEM fields where women are underrepresented. In 2011, the San Diego Chapter of AWIS awarded $7,000 in scholarships, to women at different levels of their academic careers. The program received a record number of applications, and awarded scholarships to 7 very ambitious and talented students with exceptional achievements in academics and research in addition to community service and outreach activities. The AWIS-SD Scholarship recipients were recognized at the AWIS-SD WIST conference on May 14, 2011. The fields of study of the scholarship winners in the past have included: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Experimental Psychology. For more information about the 2012 Scholarships, please visit the Scholarship Program page.
The Career Development Award The San Diego Chapter of AWIS sponsored the career development award. These $1000 awards were designed to assist AWIS members who need additional training or coursework to help them successfully transition into a new field within the science and technology workplace. Past winners have transitioned into careers in science writing, regulatory affairs, and clinical research.
Our last Career Development Award was presented at the AWIS-SD Open House on November 4, 2010.
Volunteer opportunities The Scholarship Committee welcomes new volunteers. Activities include: updating contact list of science faculty and financial aid offices for distributing scholarship information, advertising the scholarship program in the fall, selecting scholarship recipients in the winter, presenting scholarship recipients at the annual AWIS event (WIST or Gala), and introducing scholarship winners to AWIS San Diego activities and events.
