About the speakers:
Dorothy Sears
Dr. Dorothy (Dody) Sears, Associate Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego, has been conducting obesity and type 2 diabetes-related research for 17 years. She is an internationally recognized expert in these fields, and has recently broadened her focus to include breast cancer. Dr. Sears uses a variety of analytical approaches to identify which and how physiological pathways are altered in disease and after therapeutic intervention. Dr. Sears aims to identify and characterize genes and metabolites that are regulators and/or biomarkers of insulin resistance and which can be used as novel therapeutic targets or diagnostic tools. She is Principal Investigator of an on-going clinical trial testing novel dietary interventions for improving insulin sensitivity in obese subjects with the Metabolic Syndrome. She has been an invited speaker at the National Institutes of Health, the Aegean Conference Series, the University of Wisconsin, and other locations. Dr. Sears is Chair of the UCSD School of Medicine Recruitment and Admissions Committee, President of the American Diabetes Association San Diego Area Community Leadership Board, and President of the Association for Women in Science San Diego Chapter. Hanne Hoffmann
Since 2012 Hanne Hoffmann Ph.D., is a postdoctoral fellow at the Univ. of California San Diego in Molecular Endocrinology. Her current work is focused on understanding the regulation of genes involved in the development and maturation of the reproductive system of mammals.
Her graduate work was conducted as a collaboration between two labs in Europe allowing her to obtain the European mention (bilingual) as well as a double Ph.D. in Biology and Health from Montpellier University 2 (2010, France) and in Biochemistry from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2010, Spain). Her work focused on cocaine-induced synaptic and molecular changes in the brain and was focused on cocaine’s effects on G-protein coupled receptor (GOCR) signal transduction and heterodimer formation.
Dr. Hoffmann is an active member of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) San Diego Chapter where she is engaged as a committee member of the Strategy Session.
