Erin Dunn Corporate Sponsorship Co-Chair: Erin Dunn

Erin Dunn grew up in Seattle and received her B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Washington.  She moved to San Diego to pursue her Ph.D. in Biology at UCSD, which was conducted at the Salk Institute under advisor Ron Evans.  Her thesis work was aimed at providing a greater understanding of the role of nuclear receptors in the initiation of atherosclerosis.  This involved use of genetic mouse models and isolation of primary endothelial cells and macrophages for gene expression studies and functional assays.  In addition to her scientific work, she has been quite involved in educational outreach and donor relations at Salk Institute, believing that scientists must establish a relationship with the community to reinforce the support needed to improve health care as well as maintain an economy that depends on innovation and technology. She is currently seeking a postdoc position where she can apply her experience in vascular and endothelial biology.  An AWIS-SD member since 2007, she has served the Public Relations and Newsletter committees and is currently co-chair of the Corporate Sponsorship committee.   Julie Bordowitz Outreach Co-Chair: Julie Bordowitz
Julie received her B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology in 2003, from the University of Arizona. After a year off, during which she continued research as a technician in her undergraduate lab, she ventured to the mid-west to persue graduate school. In 2009, Julie received her Ph.D in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Michigan State University. After 5 1/2 years of long, cold winter, Julie decided she missed the beautiful SoCal weather, and moved back across the country. Currently, Julie is a post-doctoral scholar at UCSD, working on circadian signaling mechanisms, in the laboratory of Susan Golden. Julie's research interests include understanding how organisms sense conditions in their environment and subsequently relay that information in order to adapt. Outside of lab work, Julie has always been enthusiastically involved in outreach organizations such as Girl Scouts of America, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), Science Connection (UofAZ), and continues to serve on committees and groups dedicated to fostering interest in science, math, and engineering for youth.
